Before You Invest: 3 Things You Must Have

Posted on May 5, 2026May 15, 2026 by Hamit Pena Sierra

Let’s not mess this up.

👉 Investing without a foundation is how people lose money.

Not because investing is bad, but because they weren’t ready.

Most Beginners Skip This

They hear about investing, they want to start right away, so they jump in.

No plan. No safety net.

👉 That’s a mistake.

Before You Invest Anything, You Need This

No shortcuts here, if you don’t have these 3 things, fix that first:

1. An Emergency Fund

This is non-negotiable.

👉 You need 3–6 months of expenses in cash.

Why? Because life happens:

  • You lose your job
  • Something breaks
  • Unexpected bills show up.

If all your money is invested what happens when that happens?

👉 You’ll be forced to sell, maybe at a loss, and this is how beginners get burned.

2. No High-Interest Debt

If you have credit card debt, stop. Seriously!!

👉 Paying 20% interest while trying to invest makes no sense.

You’re losing faster than you can gain. Instead, pay off that debt first, then invest.

3. Stable Income

This one gets ignored, but it matters.

👉 If your income is unstable, investing becomes stressful.

You’ll constantly worry about needing money, which leads to bad decisions.

You don’t need a perfect job, just something steady enough that you’re not relying on your investments in the short term.

Why This Matters More Than Picking Investments

People obsess over:

  • Which stocks to buy
  • Which ETF is best
  • When to invest

None of that matters if your base is weak.

👉 A strong foundation beats a “perfect” investment.

Investing

For beginners who want to start investing in Canada without unnecessary complexity, this platform is often one of the easiest ways to take the first step.

What Happens If You Ignore This

Let’s be real, if you skip this step:

  • You’ll panic when the market drops.
  • You’ll sell when you shouldn’t
  • You’ll treat investing like a short-term tool.

👉 And that’s how people lose money.

The Bottom Line

👉 Investing works best when you don’t need the money anytime soon.

And that only happens when:

  • You have a safety net.
  • You’re not drowning in debt.
  • Your income is stable.

Build that first and then invest.

Next

Now that your foundation is clear…

👉 What are you actually investing for?

Let’s talk about goals and timelines—this changes how you invest.
